Our great love affair with delis and the perfect sandwich are a great way to fulfill our day and reach our quota of sodium intake for the week in one fell swoop. What better way to do this than with the iconic pastrami sandwich and what better place to sink your teeth into a mile high sandwich then in NYC?
So what is pastrami really? Pastrami was originally made from beef, but today you can find it made also from pork, mutton, and even turkey. The raw meat is brined, partially dried, seasoned with herbs and spices, hence the beautiful rind, and then smoked and steamed and there you have it. Now, where is the best place to get this heaped on a sandwich in the Big Apple?
I think the name says it all at Pastrami Queen. Located on Lexington between E. 78th and 79th Streets in Manhattan this is an uptown favorite for those seeking a delicious sandwich. They serve their juice thick cut pastrami on Jewish rye. The secret, if you ask for Dino sized, you get extra pastrami and no extra cost. It doesn’t get any better than that.
If you are traveling off the island and find yourself in the Bronx treat yourself to Liebman’s Kosher Deli. It is one of the last kosher delis left in this borough. They make their pastrami in house. It is smoked then the tender meat is thin sliced and served however you would like it.
Katz’s Delicatessen is an iconic sandwich shop in NYC. It is located on E. Houston at Ludlow in Manhattan. Their pastrami is hand sliced and mildly smoked. Order it juicy and you will be in awe of this mile high sandwich. Your biggest quandary will be how you can possibly fit it in your mouth because you’ll barely be able to wrap your hands around it.
It should come as no surprise that you may have some naysayers to this list. It is New York after all, and they love a good debate about, well, anything. If these are on this list there is probably going to be a debate on how best to order it as well. That’s up to you. You can be a traditionalist and just go with simple yellow mustard, or be truly decadent and order it with coleslaw, cheese and Russian dressing. Why start counting the calories now.
